For all courses outside the Doctor of Medicine program, click on the arrow in the box to bring up the menu. Select the desired grading mode and click again.
The Office of Programs and Academic Assessment (OPAA) maintains a current list of courses for which the S/U grading system is approved. If S/U was selected, you must enter a rationale.
If the course is graded on a normal (standard) basis, check the box provided if it may be taken on a Pass/Fail (now called Credit/No Credit) basis if students qualify for this option. If this course may be audited by registered visitors, check the box provided. Course information on pass/fail (credit/no credit) and auditing are currently not enforced by the student system when a student requests this option, but enforced by the persons/offices authorized to approve such student requests (see policy information of this question).
Courses offered in the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program will have a different selection of grading modes to choose from. For courses offered in the Doctor of Medicine program (course subjects BMS, CLER, PRCL, SPEC), select a grading mode from the pull-down menu. Click on the arrow in the box to bring up the menu. Select the desired grading mode and click again.
Grading Mode - Policy
All courses except those in the Doctor of Medicine program (explained below) will use one of the following two grading modes:
Normal (standard) Grading Mode. Students receive one of the following grades: A=Excellent; B=Good; C=Average; D=Poor but passing; F=Failure; IN=Incomplete; DF=Grade deferred. The Normal (standard) Grading Mode assumes a letter system that excludes Credit/No Credit and Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grades.
Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory Mode. Students receive a grade of S=Satisfactory or U=Unsatisfactory only. S/U is generally used in graduate thesis research courses and graduate courses given for zero credit (includes those numbered 593, 595, 597, 598, and 599) and other courses such as practicum and seminar. If this grading mode is chosen, the following statement will appear in the course catalog: “Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading only.”
The Satisfactory/unsatisfactory grading system should be requested only if the nature of the course would preclude assigning a normal (standard) grade for the course. S/U grading would apply to all of the students who are enrolled in the course. A course must be approved as an S/U graded course if these grades are to be awarded. A rationale must be indicated for the use of the S/U grading mode. For examples of valid rationales (which may be copied and pasted into the course request), see the examples for this question.
Pass/Fail Mode. (Now called Credit/No Credit in Banner) If you check this box, students will be allowed to take this course on a credit/no credit basis, UNLESS they do not qualify for this option due to college or school policy, and this will depend on their major and other coursework. Depending on college or school policy, students may elect to enroll in a normally (standard) graded course on a Credit/No Credit basis and receive a grade of CR=Credit or NC=No Credit. For more information on the credit/no credit policy, see the appropriate general information on the credit/no credit mode in the current undergraduate or graduate catalog, and in your college or school credit/no credit policy section in the undergraduate catalog. If a student is approved to take a course credit/no credit, faculty members assign a normal (standard) grade to the student. OAR will convert the normal (standard) grade to either Credit or No Credit when posted to the student’s record. Course information on credit/no credit is currently not enforced by the student system when a student requests this option, but enforced by the persons/offices authorized to approve such student requests.
Audit Mode. Allows registered visitors to attend a class. The privilege of attending classes as a visitor is granted on or after the first day of instruction only by the instructor of the class and the dean of the college concerned. Visitors are not permitted in laboratory, military, or physical education classes, nor are they permitted to write an examination for course credit or to participate in class activities. Course information auditing is currently not enforced by the student system when a student requests this option, but enforced by the persons/offices authorized to approve such student requests.

Doctor of Medicine Grading Options:
Special grades are given for courses in the Doctor of Medicine program. These grades are given in courses with the subjects BMS, CLER, PRLC, and SPEC only:
Basic Medical Sciences (O,S,U,P,NG,IN)
Clinical M-3 Elective (PR, U)
Specialty - Chicago (S,U)
Grading Mode – Examples
Sample rationales for use of the S/U grading mode:
- This is a thesis research/seminar/project research course; all such courses award a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grade only.
(Copy and paste this rationale for all courses numbered 593, 595, 597, 598, and 599).
- This is a seminar course in which students are graded on attendance and participation. An S/U grade is most appropriate.
- The course grade is based on whether or not the student meets the educational objectives of the field experience in an agency setting. Although periodically the instructor will evaluate the student's performance directly and will assign a grade, the evaluations of agency supervisors will also be considered. The content of the course does not lend itself to normal (standard) grading.
- The course includes a major experiential component and focuses largely on personal development.
- Mastery level skill development is the focus of the course.
- This is an orientation course in which students are expected to attend class, participate in class discussion, and summarize research findings on careers in engineering. There are no other means to evaluate students to award a normal (standard) grade.
