If you check this box, the system will generate one additional page of questions labeled “GenEd.” The GenEd page will require you to pick one or more of the six categories in which your course fits, then explain why the course fits into the category, and also explain your assessment plan for the course. You will be required to complete this GenEd page in order to request such credit.

The following are definitions for each option provided:

Enter in the second box the degrees, including concentrations within these degree programs (if applicable), minors or certificates in which this course will be a requirement or selective.

Requirement: A "required" course must be completed by all students in a given program of study. The program of study may include degrees, including concentrations within these degree programs (if applicable), minors or certificates. If this box is checked, you must also list the degrees, including concentrations within these degree programs (if applicable), minors or certificates in which this course will be required in the text box.

Selective: A "selective" is available to students in a given program of study to meet the requirements for that program, but is not required for all students in the program. A selective is one course in a group of two or more courses, a subset of which is required for the program. The program of study may include degrees, including concentrations within these degree programs (if applicable), minors or certificates. If this box is checked, you must also indicate degrees, including concentrations within these degree programs (if applicable), minors or certificates in which this course will be a selective in the text box.

Selectives are described in the course catalogs as:

“One course chosen from among CrJ 340, 350, and 360.”

In this case, CrJ 340, CrJ 350, and CrJ 360 are all selectives.

Elective (service): To be awarded a degree, many programs allow for elective hours to taken in addition to required courses in order to meet total hours required for the degree. Choose this option if you want the course serve as an elective or service course for students within or outside any degree programs you offer.

For Undergraduate courses only:

General Education Credit: The new General Education model attempts to provide enough structure to guarantee a certain level of intellectual breadth, while at the same time allowing students the opportunity to select courses or clusters of courses around areas of their own interests. General Education at UIC has two main components: a grouping of core courses that are clustered around six themes (see General Education Core) and sets of required proficiencies. The specific requirements vary from college to college. All colleges, however, require a minimum of 24 semester hours of credit (per Board of Trustees) with at least one course in each of the six categories of general education for the first component and proficiency in writing (as demonstrated by successful completion of English 160 and 161 or by certain scores on placement or other tests) for the second component. The General Education Core areas are: Analyzing the Natural World, Understanding the Individual and Society, Understanding the Past, Understanding the Creative Arts, Exploring World Cultures, Understanding U.S. Society. If you feel that your 100- or 200- level course fits into one or more of the categories just listed, you may choose to check this box and petition for GenEd credit. You will then be required to fill out the GenEd page that appears upon selecting the General Education checkbox.

Requests for General Education will need to be approved by the line college, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (if not the line college), and the Senate Committee on Educational Policy before they can be offered for General Education credit.

English Composition: The University requires two semesters of writing, fulfilled with the courses English 160 and 161, English Composition I and II, each 3 semester hours (or designated course equivalents). Any course which will fulfill this requirement as an equivalent of English 160 or 161 should indicate this by checking this box.

Other (describe): If there is a specific purpose for the course not covered above, check this box and briefly describe the purpose here. Some examples of other purposes are: to meet the needs of Continuing Education offerings, or college-based requirements (e.g., in LAS, some examples are Quantitative Reasoning or Writing in the Discipline; in the College of Business Administration, Quantitative Skills Courses).

If this box is checked, you must also describe the purpose the course will serve in the text box.

  5. A course being proposed by a department may be required of all students in the MA in Linguistics program and may also be taken as an elective in other programs, specifically English graduate programs. This is expressed as:

  6. A course being proposed by a department may be listed on a menu of courses from which students must choose one in order to fulfill requirements for the Major in African-American Studies, may be an elective for many undergraduate programs on campus, fulfills the GenEd requirement, Category Understanding U.S. Society.
